As the University of Northampton prepares to move into its new premises, the university is also set to take advantage of its new heating network.
The network, which is 1600 metres long, will supply the entire campus with hot water and heating. The network was built by Vital Energi, a British company specializing in sustainable energy systems. The company also carried out the piping work, high voltage cabling and communication cabling in the new university campus.
Steve Webster, director of Vital contracts, commented on the news, saying:
“This is a major development for the area, so it is fantastic to see that the university have put district heating at the heart of their energy infrastructure, creating a low-carbon, efficient network which can deliver green heat and hot water for decades to come.”
The work on the project was carried out in 35 weeks, with the cost of the contract estimated to be around £1.25 million. The campus, which is set to open its doors to its first students in September 2018, can accommodate 15,000 students, while having a residential capacity of 1200 and will also provide recreational facilities.
Bob Griggs, the project director for the University of Northampton, also expressed his satisfaction at the project, stating:
“Developing the University’s commitment to our sustainability agenda and environmental infrastructure has been a key factor in the development of the University’s Waterside Campus, working with Vital Energi we have a sustainable, future proof heating network which will service the campus well.”
